The Winter Blues
There are a few different birthstones that represent December; tanzanite, zircon and turquoise. One thing they all share is their vibrant blue hues. Including one of these beautiful blues in your winter wardrobe is definitely a must.
History and Origins
Tanzanite is the most recently discovered gem of all three. It was discovered in Tanzania by herders in 1967. Tiffany & Co. decided to be the main distributor of tanzanite and in 1968 gave it it's name because of its place of discovery.
Contrary to tanzanite, zircon is Earth's oldest mineral and comes in multiple colors. However, it's blue color is the most popular. Zircon was believed to have sleeping properties and "ward off evil." Today it is believed to "increase confidence and compassion."
Turquoise had lot of different uses in many countries and cultures in the past and is famous for it's unmistakable blue color. "From ancient Egyptians to Persians, Aztecs and Native Americans, kings and warriors alike admired turquoise for thousands of years." Turquoise even was used for ceremonies and on hunting bows.
Don't be confused by the history of these gems, they are still versatile gems that can be worn everyday and for any occasion.
